Do not close Carlys playground.
The Issue
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY -- Carly's Playground, a disc golf course at Mt. Holiday in Traverse City will be shut down because of safety concerns with the newly installed zip line.
Carly Jean Lewis Playground opened for play in 2012 in remembrance of Carly Lewis, a Traverse City teen who was murdered in 2011.
Mt. Holiday's board of directors and Carly's Playground officials met last week to discuss what would happen with the course this year.
Mt. Holiday's president, Mark Ray, said there were safety concerns with the disc golf and the new zip line course being too close together, so they decided not to renew their lease agreement with the disc golf course.
Todd Lewis, Carly’s father and President of Carly's Playground, received a letter from the board of directors on Tuesday stating the board’s decision to end the lease agreement.
The letter, signed by Mark Ray, read in part,
“The time has come for us to expand into other activities that better suit our mission statement.”
"This is not just about that it's a memorial course for my daughter,” said Todd Lewis, Carly’s father. “This is about a gift to the community that they are rejecting and it's just not right."
Ray said the decision not to continue the lease agreement was not a unanimous decision. He said safety is the number one priority at Mt. Holiday.

Mt. Holiday was formed in 1949 when a group of local businessmen obtained permission to construct a ski run on state owned land. The area was created using volunteers, prison labor, services and donations. In 1985, the area was purchased by Warren Brosch and his wife Sue. The Brosch’s added two chairlifts, a tube run and a terrain park. After Warren’s death in 1999, Sue Brosch placed the area up for sale. In response to the concern that the area would be sold and developed, a volunteer group formed Mt. Holiday, Inc., a nonprofit corporation to purchase the area. The group set a goal to raise $1.5 million to acquire the area, refurbish it and open to the public. The mission of Mt. Holiday is to provide four seasons of outdoor recreation, build strong minds and bodies in a safe, clean and healthy environment for people of all ages, with a continuing focus on disadvantaged youth.
