Save GWR's 2+4 Castle HSTs! AND NOW CROSS COUNTRY'S!

The Issue

The Intercity 125, or class 43 HST has been the face of the Uk rail scene for more than 47 years! However, due to their age, most were withdrawn from mainline express service in 2019. Luckily, GWR, Cross Country, and Scotrail have chosen to keep their HSTs. GWR has saved 12 of these iconic trains and dubbed them "castle sets", and has given each class 43 locomotive a nameplate after a Cornish castle. Cross Country has around 5 HST sets that operate a handful of daily services, such as Edinburgh to Plymouth. These are the last proper "Express" HSTs in the UK.  All remaining sets have been refurbished up to modern standards, and are fit for mainline use. Unfortunately, GWR has recently announced that they will be retiring these trains by December 2023! And Cross Country to withdraw their sets in October 2023! After 47 years, the HST will no longer exist in much of the UK, and these recently refurbished Cross Country sets and unique "castle sets" will be sent to scrap! These trains have become a part of the Great British landscape, and it would be truly heartbreaking to see them leave. Both crew and passengers alike LOVE these trains, so why not keep these HST sets in service for as long as possible? After all, keeping them would allow the general public to experience these historic British Rail Icons. Not everyone can afford the special charter trains like the midland pullman, which would be the only place to experience a proper HST!  Let's work together to save these iconic beasts from scrap and have them registered as heritage vehicles, whether or not they continue regular passenger service with GWR and XC!
