Save the Huntington Harbor Fuel Dock

The Issue

Hello Huntington Beach Residents, boaters, and concerned local citizens.

As some of you already know, the current owners of “Mariner’s Point” have indirectly announced their intent to shutdown fuel service in October and permanently end the ability for a fuel dock to be redeveloped in the future.

For those of you that are new to this issue I would implore you to read this information and consider how important the ability to provide fuel to both private and public safety watercraft that operate out of Huntington Harbor.

Many of the public safety issues have been covered in articles in the OC Register, the HB Independent, the Log, and other publications both online and offline (links provided below).

Please consider that the following services that operate out of Huntington Harbor:

  • Huntington Beach Lifeguard’s safety boats
  • Orange County Sherrif Department Harbor Patrol (OCSD)
  • OCSD is also responsible for acting on behalf of our Federal Homeland Security in terms as first responders protecting our waterways
  • Clean Harbors who operates a clean up boat to remove unwanted runoff from Huntington Harbor’s waterways that can also float in to Bolsa Chica wetlands
  • Numerous on the water based pump-out services to remove unwanted grey water from boats that would prefer to pay rather than use the publically operated pump-out stations
  • Coast Guard and Naval Security for small/agile boats that protect our coast from terrorism, human trafficking, and water based drug drops

In addition to these issues, regardless of where you live in Huntington Beach or Orange County we all need to consider:

Property values of over 1,500 waterfront homes who’s value may significantly decrease if boaters decide it is too difficult to fuel their boats and new buyers looking for a waterfront home decide not to purchase because of this
Approximately 6,000 privately owned boats in Huntington Harbor that generate substantial property tax on the boats themselves, revenues that flow to both City and County services

While it is unclear what the current operators true intent is in not responding to numerous requests to transfer operation of the dock to a long-time interested operator it is critical to prevent the imminent shut down of this critical resource to all of us who live or visit Huntington Beach, from the Newport Border to the edge of Seal Beach.
