Humane Societies, as a rule, function for animal welfare, first and foremost.  Saving lives is paramount.  There are situations, when surrendering an animal is not a choice.  These individuals become tormented, beyond repair.  Life becomes tortuous, unbearable and intolerable.  Having no answers haunts the psyche and the heart. The ethical choice, is to work with all considered parties and support a sense of justice, for all involved. There is more protection for the new companions.  The former individuals should also be entitled to the basic need of a sense of peace.  The animals do not forget.  Do the right thing for your adopted babies.  Let them know you show compassion for their former families.  Provide closure.  Show empathy.  It should never be about selfishness or insecurity.  These are human flaws.  Please make advocacy for all involved; a priority.  Individuals, like myself, never fully recover.
