MARIKINA ANIMAL SHELTER: Stop impounding and euthanizing, start sheltering.

The Issue

Stray animals have a very high population in Marikina City, especially dogs and cats. The city has an ordinance which prohibits straying of animals that is strictly implemented. Those animals that are collected will be impounded. The process of claiming the animals by their owners is complicated and will cost the owner while those who were not claimed face unfortunate fates.

Should a pet dog or cat be relinquished by their owners or taken from their owners (who give them up out of fear of being prosecuted by the City)? The dogs end up in a section of the pound where they cannot be rehomed or adopted.

Dogs like DOG #119 (see photo) who were caught from the Resettlement Area have no hope of ever being adopted. It does not matter if a good family wants to adopt him. He will be euthanized.

By building an animal shelter where stray animals or surrendered pets can be taken care of, we will help in reducing the animal abuse that occurs in our municipality and provide a better future for our furry friends. In some cities like Quezon City, sheltered animals are also on training to become service animals.

  • The animal abuse and neglect that occur in the local areas and current city pound include:

Starvation of dogs and cats.
Dehydration or contaminated water supply.
Compact / over crowded cages.
Animals are left severely ill or injured without vet treatment.
Mishandling of animals.
Rusted cages without proper base/bed.
Lacking materials that are necessary for daily activities such as food and water bowls, rugs, and air system.
Pregnant dogs would give birth in cages that are shared by several dogs too.
Reported killings of animals with the use of euthanasia.
