Allowing pets that make breakfast.

Allowing pets that make breakfast.

The Issue

With the increasing trend toward healthy living, many residents have started small backyard gardens. After enjoying the incredible satisfaction of eating delicious produce grown at home, the next logical step are eggs. Raising chickens have been a part of human existence for millennia. Having a small flock of hens can not only bring eggs to the table but a sense of grounding many people miss in our modern, technology infused lives. Children can learn responsibility and earn a reward for good care as they gather eggs. The birds themselves, particularly the layer breeds, are often friendly, easy going and beautiful. They can become a true pet, willing to sit on a lap.

Many townships are beginning to allow small flocks of four to six birds, limited to hens only. Roosters are, without a doubt, loud and do not limit crowing to the morning only and, while hens often appreciate a male in the house, they are not required for egg laying.  Chickens are considered "poultry" and not "livestock", so allowing chickens will not open a door to other larger, noisier and, frankly, stinkier animals. When well cared for, chickens do not need a lot of room. Even  something as small as a rabbit hutch can comfortably house a couple birds. South Florida's climate encourages an open coop and run that can be easy to keep clean and predator proof.

Let's get with our commissioners to show we have enough interest in the community to allow small flocks of housed hens! Thank you!
