Treat and Reduce Childhood Obesity

Treat and Reduce Childhood Obesity

The Issue

Medical Nutrition Therapy is applied in many of our daily lives. Those with hypertension, diabetes mellitus or other such chronic diseases are seeking care from all sources around them instead of the pure science of application provided by a registered dietitian. Due to this, individuals are faced with scary health consequences, having to alter their activities of daily living and creating new habits for health.

It is estimated 90% of the $3.5 trillion health care expenditure is used for chronic conditions, with 53% of spending for those with >6 conditions and 24% for those with 4-5 conditions. The is very important when considering how to change a diet or approach healthy weight loss while adhering to current medications and medical orders.

By supporting the Medical Nutrition Therapy Act you are helping to protect these individuals from inaccurate nutrition information provided by sources such as online health gurus. The MNT Act allows Social Security and Medicare to cover medical nutrition therapy for prediabetes, obesity, renal disease, diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, malnutrition, eating disorders, or other such cause of unintentional weight loss/gain. If the coverage from this act is lost, individuals would have to pay out of pocket to consult a registered, licensed professional for their diet and medical advice to manage their condition. This is important to consider with upcoming generations being exposed to more sedentary times due to the pandemic. To prevent the development of many chronic diseases, starts with setting a standard for nutrition and activity at a young age, and to allow intervention for those in all socioeconomic levels by providing such services under Medicare coverage. Without proper coaching for these conditions, many individuals fall prey to side effects of a neglected disease, such as limb amputation or development of Type II Diabetes Mellitus after an adolescence of trending obese or overweight.

Please sign in support of continuing public health care support for chronic disease states by qualified professionals. Thank you!
