Did you know that neither Florida, or Federal employment laws require your employer to provide you a rest period or meal break if you are over the age of 18? In fact there are only 22 states that have any kind of requirements regarding providing breaks to employees.

That’s right! That means it doesn’t matter if you work 4 hours or 12 hours, your employer can make you work straight through without any kind of break. You can also be subject to disciplinary action by your employer if you take an unauthorized break to use the restroom, or take that call from your kid. Crazy, right? Some companies will go as far as requiring medical documentation stating that you need an “accommodation” for medical purposes.

I hear it all the time from friends, and coworkers: “I know my rights!” So, I decided to look up exactly what my rights were. I was not expecting to learn that, in fact, a rest break or lunch break was not included in my rights as an employee. The only word that comes to mind when I think about that is “Exploitation”. Many of us are fortunate enough to work for an employer that does provide a scheduled break of some sort, but it’s not required which means it can also be taken away.

It’s not right, and it’s time to let our law makers know that we demand mandatory breaks, and meal periods!

It’s not the CEO’s, VP’s, Directors, etc. that keep the customers happy and the company running. It’s the labor of the dozens, hundreds, or thousands of employees and it’s easy to get burnt out.
