(MAPLES COLLEGIATE INCIDENT) End Racism and Discrimination Towards Sikh Communities

The Issue

As a concerned individual, I am deeply disturbed by the recent incident of racism and discrimination towards Sikhs in our society. This petition aims to raise awareness about the urgent need to end such acts of hatred and prejudice, specifically targeting the Sikh community.

Personal Story:
My friend, Robby Pandher, a student at Maples Collegiate, recently experienced a distressing incident that highlights the severity of this issue. On October 2, 2023, during lunchtime at school, Robby's turban was forcefully pulled off by two black students who proceeded to physically brutally assault him. Despite being outnumbered and injured, Robby bravely defended himself using his kada alone.

This act of violence not only targeted Robby personally but also attacked his Sikh religion. It is disheartening to witness such acts of intolerance within our educational institutions where diversity should be celebrated and respected.

Unfortunately, instead of addressing this incident appropriately and providing support for Robby's well-being both physically and emotionally, it has come to my attention that Maples Collegiate has suspended Robby for a week with potential expulsion looming over his head. This unjust response further perpetuates the discrimination faced by Sikhs in our society.

Racism against Sikhs is not an isolated event; it is an ongoing problem that affects countless individuals within this community. According to data from Statistics Canada (2018), hate crimes targeting religious groups have been steadily increasing over recent years. The Sikh community remains one of the most targeted groups due to their visible religious symbols like turbans or kadas.

It is crucial that we take immediate action against racism and discrimination towards Sikhs communities in order to foster an inclusive society where everyone feels safe regardless of their religious beliefs or cultural background.

Therefore:

1) We urge Maples Collegiate administration to reconsider their decision regarding Robby's suspension and potential expulsion. Instead, they should provide him with the necessary support and ensure a safe learning environment for all students.

2) We call upon educational institutions across the nation to implement comprehensive anti-racism programs that educate students about Sikhism, promote cultural diversity, and foster empathy towards different religious practices.

3) We demand that law enforcement agencies prioritize investigating hate crimes against Sikhs and hold the perpetrators accountable for their actions. This will send a strong message that racism will not be tolerated in our society.

4) We encourage community leaders, politicians, and policymakers to actively engage in dialogue with Sikh organizations to address systemic issues of discrimination faced by this community. By working together, we can create lasting change.

It is time for us as a society to stand up against racism and discrimination towards Sikhs communities. Let us come together to ensure that incidents like what happened to Robby Pandher become relics of the past rather than recurring nightmares for individuals within this community.

Sign this petition today if you believe in equality, justice, and respect for all individuals regardless of their religious or cultural background. Together, we can make a difference!
