Why Carnegie Learning (MATHia) isn't right for students

Why Carnegie Learning (MATHia) isn't right for students
The Issue
Carnegie Learning (better known as MATHia) is a new "learning" program that is designed to show students what State Testing questions will look like. Manteno Middle School is a school that has recently been using this program throughout all grade levels. The teachers recommend spending only 20 minutes a day working on this website and they expect about four Workspaces (Lessons) to be completed every week. These Workspaces have due dates. The problem with Carnegie Learning is....
- The time needed to complete these workspaces vary from 30 seconds to up to four hours
- The time actually needed to complete these lessons are unrealistic and stressful
- Students still have other homework to complete on top of these repetitive and tedious lessons
- The lessons don't give helpful step-by-step instructions on how to complete certain math problems
- The whole system is to make students get better State Testing scores so the school looks better on paper and to the State of Illinois as a whole
- Students should only have to worry about State Testing for a week of school at most
- If these lessons aren't completed, it is put into student's grade books as a missing assignment ultimately making it a zero percent
- Students are also assigned a large paper book with the math website
It's a sad process that is being used to make Manteno Middle School look better on paper. The process below explains the corrupt system...
- Students are told to practice questions similar to what would be put on a state test
- While the teachers say you only need to spend up to 20 minutes a day practicing, for some students it take hours because they receive little to no help at home
- If the student's lessons aren't completed, they get a bad grade
Help us stop teachers from giving bad grades to their students simply because they can't complete nearly impossible lessons that'll make the school district look better to the state. This is only for the school's personal gain
