Why this petition matters

Started by Elijah Ashbeck

African American woman, Ruby and her children came out of Wal-Mart, in Manitowoc WI to find what appeared to be a hunting tag on her vehicle. It wasn’t until she grabbed it to find out that it was an “Official (N-word) Hunting License.” Why is this a big deal you might ask? Well, Ruby is a Black woman who has done nothing to bring this kind of threat on her. Her and her children should not have to be fearful for their own safety for doing absolutely nothing wrong. She shouldn’t have to explain to her children what that was. She shouldn’t have to live in fear in the very town she calls home. Being Black is not a crime and if you threaten someone because of their race, it is racist.

Let Manitowoc County and Judge Dietz hear us loud and clear. We will not allow them to sweep this under the rug, we will not allow them to act as though these hateful and blatantly racist acts do not happen in Manitowoc County.

Manitowoc County DA originally charged suspect Cathy Yauch with a felony for Terroristic threats with a Hate Crime as an Enhancer. Little to the victim's knowledge, the county dropped the Hate Crime Enhancer without clear reason. The charges have now been changed to Public Threat/Public Fear. We are asking the Hate Crime be reattached to these charges, as it was very clearly a hate crime. We ask Manitowoc County to hold this individual accountable for her actions, reattach Hate Crime as an Enhancer, and charge her to the fullest extent. Requesting and seeing these demands met from the Manitowoc County Courts is crucial in showing that these actions and any of the like are not accepted or tolerated within our community.
