No More 50 - No More Leniency

No More 50 - No More Leniency
The Issue
The No More 50 campaign should be known by everyone in India. Section 429 of the Indian constitution imposes a fine of Rs. 50 on anyone who causes harm to an animal by murdering, poising, or wounding. Yes, in India, cruelty to animals is punishable by a fine of mere Rs. 50.
We are in the year 2022, but the laws from the previous 60 years remain unchanged. Animal abusers in our country can get bail for just Rs. 50. Many organisations are working towards it and calling for stronger penalties for animal cruelty. Throwing stones at dogs or even starving their own pets and abandoning them is pretty common in India, and if they get caught, they only have to pay Rs. 50 as a penalty. A repeat offender is subject to a fine of up to Rs. 250. The penalty is less than the cost of a large pizza.
Cases of animal cruelty are on the rise. Some people are spotted beating, upsetting, or even murdering animals for the sake of posting anything on social media. A man shooting a dog for the sole purpose of displaying his power on social media, a woman chopping off her own pet’s leg to demonstrate discipline, and three youngsters lighting firecrackers on a cow’s body for amusement are some incidents from last year. CCTV footage of a guy assaulting a dog in the city of Mumbai was leaked in March 2021. In Telangana, a monkey was hanged and beaten to death, and a street dog was thrashed and chained to a scooter before being thrown off. In Kolkata, nursing students poisoned 16 puppies. A story went viral after a pregnant elephant ate a firecracker that the locals had masked as a fruit. There are many incidences of animal abuse that go unreported or unregistered. In India, millions of animals are abused, injured, and killed every year. Many pets were abandoned on the streets by their owners in the past.
Huge thanks to animal rights organisations such as PETA, PFA, and others who work relentlessly to protect animals. Let’s hope that the government enacts strict anti-cruelty legislation so that no one gets away with killing an animal simply by paying Rs. 50.
