The Issue

Every day, drivers trust that everyone on the road is capable, alert, and safe behind the wheel. But what happens when age-related decline in vision, reflexes, or cognitive ability goes unchecked?

I’m starting this petition after a personal experience that left me shaken—and deeply concerned. I was recently hit by an elderly driver whose slowed reaction time and impaired judgment directly caused the collision. Thankfully, I wasn’t seriously hurt, but it could have been much worse.

This is not about targeting seniors or taking away their independence. It’s about ensuring safety for everyone—including elderly drivers themselves—by introducing mandatory driving retests every 2-3 years starting at age 70.

As we age, it’s natural for our bodies and minds to change. Regular medical checkups catch health issues early. Shouldn’t our driving ability be treated with the same care?

We are calling for legislation that requires:

Mandatory behind-the-wheel driving tests beginning at age 70, and repeated every 2-3 years thereafter.
Vision and cognitive screenings as part of license renewal.
Accountability measures to ensure dangerous drivers are identified before tragic accidents occur.

This is not age discrimination—it’s common sense. States like Illinois and New Hampshire already have stricter rules for elderly drivers, and it’s time for all states to adopt similar, safety-first policies.

Please sign and share this petition if you believe everyone deserves to feel safe on the road, and that driving is a privilege that should be earned—not assumed—regardless of age.
