The Issue

To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:
Whereas sudden cardiac arrest and other medical emergencies can occur at any time, including within Ontario schools;

Whereas immediate CPR and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can significantly increase the likelihood of survival and positive health outcomes;

Whereas teachers are often among the first adults available to respond to a medical emergency involving students, staff, visitors, or members of the public on school property;

Whereas ensuring teachers receive CPR and AED training would enhance school safety and preparedness across Ontario;
We, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to:

Require all certified teachers employed in publicly funded elementary and secondary schools to maintain valid CPR and AED certification;

Establish a reasonable transition period for implementation;

Provide funding and support to school boards to ensure training and recertification can be completed without undue financial burden on educators;

Ensure every publicly funded school maintains adequate emergency response equipment, including accessible AEDs.
