Mandating Trash Receptacles at EV Charging Stations for a Cleaner City

The Issue

We, the concerned citizens and advocates for a cleaner environment, recognize the significance of electric vehicles (EVs) in reducing our carbon footprint. However, we are witnessing a concerning issue at many EV charging stations across our communities.

It is observed that numerous privately owned EV charging stations, notably Tesla Superchargers at 3rd party parking lots and similar networks, lack an essential amenity—trash receptacles. The absence of proper waste disposal infrastructure has resulted in an accumulation of litter, primarily food waste and beverage containers, around these charging stations.

EV drivers often visit nearby eateries while their vehicles charge, leading to a regrettable trend of littering in these charging lots. The lack of trash cans in these areas contradicts environmental consciousness and violates local regulations against littering.

As per California Penal Code 374.4(a), it is unlawful to litter or cause littering in public or private properties.

Drivers spend an average of 20-40 minutes at EV charging stations, a significant window during which simple habits can make a substantial difference. For years, cleaning cars while refueling has been a common practice, facilitated by the presence of trash cans at gas stations. However, the same convenience is lacking at EV charging outlets, leading to an unfortunate trend of littering. The absence of trash receptacles encourages this behavior, compounded by the lack of effective littering law enforcement in these parking lots. It's time to bridge this gap and ensure that responsible waste disposal practices are as accessible at electric vehicle charging stations as they are at traditional fuel stations.

We, the undersigned, urge the following actions:

  1. Mandatory provision of trash receptacles at all EV charging stations, including but not limited to Tesla Superchargers and similar privately owned networks.
  2. Regular maintenance and emptying of these trash receptacles to ensure cleanliness and prevent overflow.
  3. Implementation of visible signage and awareness campaigns promoting responsible waste disposal practices among EV drivers and visitors to these stations.

By implementing these measures, we aim to support environmentally responsible practices while maintaining the cleanliness of our cities. Let's ensure that the shift to electric vehicles aligns with a commitment to a cleaner, greener future.
