Mandate Zero-Homework Policy in All Public Schools

Mandate Zero-Homework Policy in All Public Schools

The Issue

I launch this plea as a concerned parent who values family time highly. It pains me to see my children, and countless others, laboring over schoolwork well after their long eight-hour school day has ended. Precious family hours are being hijacked, often replaced by stress and burn-out.

This issue stretches beyond my household. According to the National Education Association and the National PTA, a general guideline for homework is 10 minutes per night per grade level. Yet, a study by Stanford University found that high school students have an average of 3.1 hours of homework per night, significantly higher than recommended. This excess can lead to multiple issues, including physical health problems, high stress levels, and less time for leisure and rest (Galloway, Conner & Pope, 2013).

Furthermore, research suggests homework isn’t always beneficial either. Education scholar Alfie Kohn argues that "there is no research evidence that indicates so much homework improves school achievement."

Therefore, we call on all relevant education authorities to implement a policy of zero homework in public schools. This will allow children to engage more with their families, pursue their interests, and, ultimately, lead more rounded and healthier lives. Please join us and offer the next generation a chance at a balanced life. Sign this petition.
