Mandate year-round functioning AC in buildings and vehicles
The Issue
Every year, people suffer or even die from extreme weather conditions, both cold and hot. We are constantly facing heat advisories that warn us of the dangers of excessively high temperatures. These heat conditions do not just make us uncomfortable, but they pose serious health risks including heat exhaustion, heatstroke, dehydration, and other complications.
Although heating systems are mandated and widely accepted as a necessity during colder months, the same consideration isn't currently extended to air conditioning (AC) systems for the heat. It's time to level the playing field when it comes to climate control both in commercial and residential buildings, as well as in vehicles. AC systems should be seen as essential to health and safety as heating systems. People have a right to live and work in environments where they can breathe easily, without the constant worry of overheating or becoming severely dehydrated.
Extreme weather events are becoming more common due to climate change. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), July 2021 was the hottest month ever recorded globally, indicating a clear pattern of rising temperatures. This rise in severe temperatures underscores the urgency of implementing solutions that ensure all environments are livable and safe.
We propose a legislative change that requires all commercial and residential buildings, as well as vehicles, to maintain fully functioning air conditioning systems year-round. This policy will not only protect the vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and those with respiratory issues but will also promote a general public health benefit.
Investing in these systems will prevent heat-related illnesses and deaths and will ultimately save on potential healthcare costs related to extreme heat exposure. Simultaneously, it drives the demand for energy-efficient air conditioning solutions which will benefit the environment in the long term.
Join us in urging lawmakers and public officials to recognize air conditioning as a requirement, just as they have with heating. Everyone deserves a safe and livable environment regardless of the season. Stand with us to bring about this vital change by signing this petition and spreading the word to ensure our voices are heard. Protect public health and promote equitable living standards by supporting mandatory year-round AC systems in all buildings and vehicles.
