The Issue

Too often, I've witnessed the heartbreaking sight of dead deer on the side of the road, limping deer with broken legs struggling to cross the street, and baby deer struck by cars, left to die helplessly. It's a distressing reality and it isn't right. These innocent creatures deserve a safe way to cross the streets of Port Townsend.

The streets of Port Townsend, WA, have become perilous for wildlife, particularly deer, who frequently cross roadways. Every year, these dangerous interactions lead to numerous car accidents and the inhumane killing of wildlife. According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, collisions with wildlife resulted in over 1,000 reported accidents across the state in 2022 alone. This not only endangers the animals but poses serious risks to drivers and passengers.

I propose the construction of wildlife bridges in strategic locations across Port Townsend, as well as speed bumps in 25mph zones to slow down speeders, and sidewalks built on streets with heavier traffic to increase visibility. Wildlife bridges have been proven effective in reducing accidents and fatalities. A study by the Western Transportation Institute found that these structures can reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions by up to 87%. The cost of building these bridges and sidewalks is outweighed by the significant benefits in terms of lives saved—both human and animal—and the reduction in public expenditure on accident-related incidents.

Implementing these solutions requires collaboration between local government, environmental groups, and community stakeholders. Funding could be sourced from a mix of city budget allocations, state grants focused on wildlife preservation and road safety, and potential federal infrastructure funds.

By supporting and signing this petition, we can urge city officials and relevant authorities to prioritize this issue and initiate the construction of wildlife bridges, and other street repairs. Together, we can create a safer, more humane environment for both our community and its treasured wildlife. Please add your signature to help make this vital change a reality.
