Mandate Universities to Explicitly State "Bachelor of Nursing" on Diplomas

The Issue

As a student in a nursing program, I work tirelessly to ensure I can provide exceptional care to my future patients. However, upon graduation, my triumph and dedication are not adequately represented on my diploma. Instead of reflecting my field of expertise, it displays a generic "Bachelor's degree."

In New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill requiring all degrees to explicitly state "Bachelor of Nursing" if the degree earned is as such. This legislation acknowledges the rigorous coursework and clinical hours necessary for a nursing degree that sets it apart from other disciplines.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates a 7% growth in employment for registered nurses from 2019 to 2029, recording nursing as one of the fastest-growing professions in the United States. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing reported 312,214 entries into baccalaureate nursing programs in 2020, highlighting the growing popularity of the field. Recognizing the specificity of the Bachelor of Nursing on diplomas would underscore the value and uniqueness of this profession, appreciated by many yet realized by few.

Let's not allow our hard work and dedication to go unrecognized. Join me in urging my university, and others alike, to represent our degrees accurately. Help millions of nurses carry pride in their diploma genuinely reflecting their academic achievement. Sign this petition to stand in solidarity with nursing students and acknowledge our dedication to the profession. Let's make the "Bachelor of Nursing" a standard notation on all relevant diplomas across the nation.
