Mandate TWU to Modify Canvas Settings for Personal Name Changes

The Issue

Students are integral to making a campus thrive. It is therefore essential that they are comfortable, safe, and represented correctly. At present, the existing system at Texas Woman's University (TWU) hinders students from representing themselves accurately. Students are unable to edit their names in the university's Canvas system. This simple restriction has significant negative effects on the mental health, well-being, and feelings of safety among gender diverse students. All students who attend TWU are required to use Canvas, and not being able to accurately represent one's self can lead to a multitude of negative implications for mental health. The current procedure for requesting a name change through the registrar is not easily accessible, requiring extra time and resources. At a time when TWU claims to value representation and inclusivity, it appears this policy is at odds with that stated commitment.

Research repeatedly has shown that respecting an individual's preferred name can greatly contribute to reducing distress among gender diverse individuals. Vance (2018) found that each time a chosen name was used, there was a statistically significant decrease in depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation, and suicidal behaviors. This situation at TWU is not just an administrative issue, but a reflection of the institution's commitment to diversity and inclusivity, impacting a large portion of students. Allowing students to easily edit their names will foster a more open and welcoming environment for all.

We implore TWU to live up to their claimed values, showing their pledge isn't simply rhetoric but something they are willing to actively implement for the benefit of their students. Enable an accessible change in the Canvas system settings allowing for personal name edits, a seemingly small action with a major positive influence on our student community.

Please sign this petition and urge TWU to act in the interest of its students, champions of diversity and inclusion that they profess to be!
