Mandate the Planting of Native Trees and Rewilding of Forests
The Issue
This matter is deeply personal, as it affects everyone across the world. It's a distressing reality that our world is under threat. If we don't rectify our actions, our planet may perish before we have the chance to repair the damage. The unchecked deforestation, coupled with inaction on rewilding efforts, results in the loss of natural habitats and contributes significantly to global carbon emissions.
According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), up to 58 thousand square miles of forest are lost each year – that's equivalent to 27 soccer fields every minute (WWF, Deforestation and Forest Degradation). All this while studies reveal planting trees to be one of the most effective ways to combat climate change, as forests capture 30% of global CO2 emissions (American Association for the Advancement of Science, 2015).
What makes this worse is the standard practice of planting non-native species, often pines or eucalyptus, which are known to grow quickly but do more harm than good. These species outcompete natives, reduce biodiversity, and alter ecosystems.
We need to take immediate action. Let's encourage the planting of indigenous tree species that contribute to healthier, biodiverse forests and demand significant investment in rewilding efforts to restore our forest ecosystems to their natural state. Your signature can drive this global change, this lifeline for our planet. Endorse this petition for a greener, sustainable world for us and future generations.
