Medians, the dividing areas between different directions of traffic, have the potential to contribute to community resiliency and food security if we utilize them wisely. Currently, many of these spaces are filled with grass or ornamental plants offering limited usage outside of aesthetics. By requiring the planting of food-bearing trees, we can turn these public spaces into productive landscapes that provide fresh, local food and increase biodiversity. Studies indicate that urban agriculture can play a critical role in reducing urban heat island effect while promoting environmental sustainability (Source: United Nations FAO). Furthermore, fruit-bearing trees can contribute significantly to urban food supplies. An example of this is Seattle's Food Forest, a public park that provides citizens with access to fresh fruits and vegetables. By modeling our medians after this project, we will be making incredible strides towards sustainability and food security.
