Mandate the Option for Anesthesia During IUD Insertion

The Issue

I am a woman who experienced intense discomfort during the insertion of my intrauterine device (IUD). The procedure, which is invasive in nature, was conducted without the option for anesthesia. This personal experience has led me to advocate for change. It is essential that women have access to anesthesia during IUD insertion if they choose it.

Intrauterine devices are one of the most effective forms of birth control, with more than 170 million users worldwide (World Health Organization). However, pain and discomfort during insertion can be a significant barrier to its use. A study published in Contraception Journal found that 17% of women undergoing IUD insertion reported pain as severe or worse than their worst menstrual cramps.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists acknowledges that while some women may tolerate IUD insertions well, others may experience significant pain. They recommend considering measures such as local anesthesia to manage this pain. Yet not all healthcare providers offer this option.

We need legislation that mandates healthcare providers to offer anesthesia as an option during IUD insertions. This will ensure every woman's comfort and autonomy over her body is respected during this procedure.

Please sign this petition and join us in advocating for better care and comfort options for women choosing an intrauterine device as their form of contraception.
