The Issue

My son, like many children across the United States, lives with nonverbal autism. Unable to vocalize his experiences, he is among the countless other students whose realities in classrooms remain unseen and unheard. I am just one of many parents facing the relentless challenge of ensuring the safety, care, and wellbeing of our special needs children in an educational environment. Our pursuit of peace of mind in entrusting our children's safety to others necessitates more stringent measures. We propose the requirement for all schools to install surveillance cameras in classrooms, with an emphasis on those dedicated to special needs education.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, approximately 15% of all public school students received special education services in the 2023-2024 academic year. This represents a vulnerable group of almost 7.5 million students who may struggle to communicate or advocate for themselves in potentially harmful situations. By having surveillance cameras in classrooms, we can help ensure transparency, safeguard student rights, and promote accountable conduct within our education system.

We do not merely seek to react to problems; instead, we seek a proactive solution in an attempt to prevent potential incidents that may jeopardize our children's safety and wellbeing. We call upon lawmakers and educators to make this change and offer children, particularly those with special needs, the protected learning environment they deserve.

Sign this petition to join our fight in guaranteeing a safe, transparent, and accountable learning environment for all students in America.
