Mandate the Installation of Air Conditioning Units on Public School Buses in Walton County, GA

The Issue

As a Walton County resident and a parent, I struggle to see my children return home from school, red-faced, drenched in sweat, and exhausted from the blistering heat within our school buses. With summer temperatures regularly reaching above 90°F, it's not just discomfort we're up against — it's a real health hazard. Nicholson (2008) found that exposure to high temperatures in confined spaces can lead to heat exhaustion and heatstroke, serious conditions that can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

Traffic increases in our county, and the routes are extending. This extension results in longer travel times, less airflow within the vehicles, and an amplified risk of heat-related illnesses for students and staff members. All these factors make the need for air-conditioned buses more urgent than ever.

Current guidelines state that school buses "may" be air-conditioned, but do not mandate it, which has led to a situation where the comfort, safety, and wellbeing of our children are compromised. According to the National Association for Pupil Transportation (2017), only 18 out of every 100 school buses in the USA have air conditioning.

Therefore, we advocate for the Walton County School District to mandate the installation of air conditioning units in all public school buses. Our children’s safety should be prioritized above all else. They deserve to travel to and from school comfortably without the risk of harm from high temperatures. We urge you to support us, for the sake of our children and the dedicated staff who transport them safely every day. Please sign this petition, because every signature is a step closer to bringing cool relief to our children.
