Mandate the Inclusion of Sunflower Seeds as an Allergen on Food Labels

The Issue

I am one among many who suffer from severe allergic reactions, specifically anaphylaxis, due to unlisted food ingredients containing sunflower seeds or sunflower oil. I personally have had 7 anaphylactic reactions, plus countless exacerbations of asthma and skin allergies. However, this is not just a personal issue; it's a public health concern that needs immediate attention.

Sunflower seeds and oil are commonly used in a variety of foods - from breads and cereals to salad dressings and snacks. However, unlike peanuts or shellfish, they are not required by law to be listed as allergens on food labels. This lack of transparency puts people like me at risk every day.

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), more than 32 million Americans have food allergies, with hundreds of thousands treated in emergency departments each year due to allergic reactions. While data specifically on sunflower seed allergies is limited, the potential for harm is clear.

We urge the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to mandate that all food manufacturers clearly list sunflower seeds and oil as potential allergens on their product labels. This change will not only protect those with known allergies but also raise awareness about this less recognized yet potentially dangerous allergen.
