Mandate the Inclusion of Removable Batteries in All Cell Phones

The Issue

The invention of the cell phone was iconic, and the Wild West beginnings of the free market of cell phones encouraged rapid innovation and expansion of communication. Unfortunately, the spirit of invention in the smartphone industry is dead - murdered by monopolistic practices from mega-corporations who have seemingly colluded to stifle the progress of innovation in the name of data harvesting, hyper targeted advertising, and the ever increasing curation of algorithm to make us, the consumer, the product of the industry. Change starts somewhere. Let it start here.

Our privacy is no longer private, our data has been co-opted, and surprisingly, the ease and personalization that technology was supposed to bring seems only a distant memory from a decade ago. Our phones, instead of being personal devices, have turned into 24/7 surveillance tools, tracking our every move regardless of whether they are on or off. But today we are taking a stand.

We call for the implementation of one specific but powerful change: removable batteries in all phones. In a survey by Greenpeace, 70% of respondents across the US, Germany, Russia, Mexico, South Korea and China believe that smartphones should be more easily repairable and more durable. It helps to extend the life of the devices and cuts electronic waste. A removable battery not only allows us the flexibility to replace a deteriorating battery ourselves, enhancing the lifespan of our devices, but also lets us to truly switch off our phones, putting a stop the non-consensual data tracking.

Our demand is not for a luxury feature, but a necessary shift to regain control over our personal devices, our privacy, and in a larger context, our lives. We appeal to regulators and manufacturers across the globe to respect our rights as consumers and to comply with this demand for the fair design of cell phones.

We encourage you to join us in this call to action by signing this petition. Your signature counts! Stand up for your right to repair, your right to privacy, and your right to control what is rightfully yours.
