I am a student who has experienced firsthand the unjust application of detentions in schools. I was given a detention for no reason, which only served to inflate the sense of authority among teachers. This is not an isolated incident but rather a reflection of an outdated system that needs urgent reform.

Detentions are often used as a quick fix to manage behavior issues, but they do not address the root causes nor provide long-term solutions. According to research by University College London (UCL), detentions can even exacerbate behavioral problems and contribute to disengagement from school.

Moreover, it's important to note that other countries have successfully implemented alternatives. For instance, Finland's education system - consistently ranked among the best globally - does not use detentions but instead focuses on fostering mutual respect between students and teachers.

It's time for all UK schools to follow suit and banish this punitive practice. Instead, let us encourage dialogue, understanding and respect as means towards effective discipline and learning environment improvement.
