Mandate Texas Landlords to Accept Housing Choice Vouchers

The Issue

From personal experience, I can attest that navigating the housing market in Texas while holding a Housing Choice Voucher (commonly known as Section 8) is no easy feat. This voucher system was created to assist individuals who are struggling with rising rental costs, yet, when it comes to finding a landlord willing to accept these vouchers in Texas, the task becomes nearly impossible.

Decent, affordable housing should not be a privilege; it is a fundamental human right. Regrettably, in Texas, residents holding these vouchers are often met with disdain and rejection, leaving them in precarious living conditions. Given its mission to accommodate low-income individuals and families, the Housing Choice Voucher program isn't bringing better housing opportunities to a significant number of Texans.

Multiple studies back up this reality. For instance, a documented report by The Houston Chronicle suggests that out of 20 major U.S. cities, Houston is the most difficult city for voucher holders seeking to move into neighborhoods with less poverty (The Houston Chronicle, 2017). Another study by the Terner Center for Housing Innovation reports that in Dallas, less than one-tenth of total rental units in the city accept vouchers (Terner Center for Housing Innovation, 2018).

These unsettling statistics underscore the necessity for a new legislation requiring all Texas landlords to accept Housing Choice Vouchers. Such policy will ensure that this federal aid actually helps the people it was intended for, and that no Texan is left homeless or forced to live in substandard conditions. We call on our lawmakers to enact this necessary change promptly. Join us in this fight for housing justice. Sign the petition today.
