The Issue

Every year, millions of plastic bottle caps are found in Canada's oceans, lakes, parks, and streets. These small plastic items are one of the biggest pollutants harming wildlife and damaging ecosystems. It’s time for Canada to step up and take real action.

I was introduced to Tethered Bottle Caps when I travelled to Europe in the summer of 2024. I didn't understand it in the beginning, but I ended up realizing their real purpose.

In 2019, the European Union passed a law requiring all plastic drink bottles under three litres to have tethered caps, caps that stay attached to the bottle while using them.  This simple but smart action prevents bottle caps from being littered onto the ground, but it also helps the world be less polluted. The rule went into full effect in July 2024, and major companies like Coca-Cola and Pepsi have already made the switch across Europe.

So why hasn't Canada started this rule?

I am asking for beverage companies and packaging companies, as well as the Canadian Government, to take leadership by mandating Tethered Bottle Caps in Canada. This small change can make a big difference. It reduces waste, helps keep our land and waterways clean, and shows that Canada is serious about sustainability.

I'm not asking for a big, expensive change, but a simple and easy change that will help our land. Tethered caps are already working in Europe. Let’s bring them to Canada and protect our environment for generations to come.
