On July 31, 2025, our family experienced an unimaginable tragedy that changed our lives forever. Our beloved grandchildren, Kayden, age 15, and Jocelyn, age 12, drowned. The pain and loss remain indescribable, and we are determined to prevent other families from enduring this heartbreaking agony.

Each year in Ontario, countless lives are lost to drowning, a completely preventable tragedy. Statistics from the Lifesaving Society of Canada report that drowning is the second leading cause of preventable death for children under the age of 14. However, simple swimming skills can drastically reduce these numbers. The Lifesaving Society's Swim to Survive program has been proven effective in teaching children the essentials to survive an unexpected fall into deep water. Consisting of just three 40-minute modules, this program could be seamlessly integrated into the elementary school curriculum.

We urge the Ontario Minister of Education to prioritize the safety of our children by introducing a Program Policy Memorandum that mandates the Swim to Survive program in all elementary schools. By equipping children with foundational swimming skills, we empower them to react effectively in water emergencies, potentially saving lives.

Our neighboring provinces of Quebec and British Columbia have already adopted measures to incorporate life-saving swimming instructions within their educational systems. Ontario must take immediate action to follow suit.

We appeal to educators, parents, and community leaders to stand with us in advocating for this vital initiative. Together, we can create a future where children are equipped with critical life-saving skills, and families are spared the heartache of losing a loved one to drowning.
