Mandate Stricter Penalties for Domestic Abuse Resulting in Late Term Miscarriages

The Issue

My name is a symbol of countless women who have suffered the unimaginable pain of losing their unborn child due to domestic abuse. My daughter, Layla, never took her first breath outside my womb because she was under the 24-week mark when I suffered a placenta abruption caused by an assault from my ex-partner. His punishment? A mere 33 months in jail. This is not justice for Layla or for any other woman and unborn child subjected to such horrendous violence.

In England and Wales alone, two women are killed each week by a current or former partner (Office for National Statistics). The law must recognize that domestic abuse can result in tragic consequences beyond physical harm to the mother – it can also cause late term miscarriages. These cases should be treated as manslaughter, not simply as another instance of domestic violence.

We demand that lawmakers acknowledge this gap in our legal system and enact stricter penalties on those whose violent actions result in the death of an unborn child. By doing so, we can ensure that stories like Layla's lead to tangible change and provide justice for victims of such heartbreaking circumstances.

Please sign this petition if you believe no more mothers should suffer this injustice without adequate legal recourse. Let's make sure our voices are heard loud and clear: We demand justice for Layla and all other victims like her.
