As parents and concerned citizens of Glenside, PA., our daily realities consist of worrying about the safety of our children walking to school. Our neighborhoods are often within walking distance to local schools, however, the lack of sidewalks means our kids have to walk on the road, exposing them to unnecessary danger.

The absence of bus routes further exacerbates this problem. With no alternative modes of transportation available, our children are forced to negotiate these hazardous conditions daily. It is alarming that in the 21st century, basic urban infrastructure like sidewalks is still lacking in our neighborhood, putting our children at risk on a daily basis.

The American Public Health Association asserts that sidewalks and open spaces can play a critical role in promoting healthy communities. A case study from New York indicated neighborhoods with sidewalks had fewer pedestrian injuries (American Journal of Public Health, 2003). These statistics underline the importance of creating safer environments for our children – something that is currently lacking in Glenside, PA. 

Therefore, we implore our local government officials to prioritize the installation of sidewalks, with precedence given to areas within walking distance to schools and those without bus routes. Our children shouldn't have to gamble with their safety, and as a community, we deserve the peace of mind that comes with secured sidewalks.
