Every day, thousands of children in Arizona travel to and from school on buses. Yet, unlike cars or other passenger vehicles, most school buses do not have seat belts. This is a significant safety concern that needs attention.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has stated that the addition of three-point seat belts could significantly reduce the risk of fatalities and injuries in school bus accidents. Despite this, Arizona does not currently require seat belts on school buses.

Furthermore, Arizona drivers learn and follow rules around school buses to ensure the safety of children. These laws regarding driving near school buses are designed to keep children safe. Yet children are unable to buckle up while riding to and from school. Requiring school buses to have seat belts would protect children.

By requiring all school buses to be equipped with seat belts, we can better protect our children during their daily commutes. It's time for Arizona to prioritize the safety of its students and mandate this crucial safety measure.
