Mandate Schools to Exclude Medical Absences from Final Exam Exemption Criteria

The Issue

My fellow students and I at Klein High School in Spring, TX, are unjustly required to take a final exam that constitutes 10% of our grade due to an unfair rule. This rule states that medical absences are not excused when considering whether a student is exempt from the final exam. It's an injustice because we have no control over these medical absences.

Despite meeting all other requirements such as maintaining grades above 75, having no disciplinary measures against us, demonstrating good conduct, and being free of any fines, we are still forced to take this high-stakes test. The current policy does not consider the uncontrollable nature of health-related issues and their impact on school attendance.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), about 6% of students miss more than 15 days of school due to illness or injury each year. These students should not be penalized for circumstances beyond their control.

We urge you to support our cause by signing this petition. We need your help in urging Klein High School and other educational institutions across the country to amend their policies so they do not unfairly disadvantage students who have had medical absences. Your signature can make a difference in ensuring fair treatment for all students regardless of their health conditions.
