Mandate School Bussing for All Students Regardless of Proximity

The Issue

**OHIO LAW STATES THAT SCHOOLS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION FOR STUDENTS WITHIN TWO MILES OF THEIR SCHOOLS.**
This isn't just an issue for Middletown, but is an issue in cities and towns across the state. My petition was aimed at Middletown, on the very most local level that it affects me, but if enough parents from across the state sign and show their support, I only hope we can take this petition state-wide.

As a resident of Middletown, OH, my son is one of the many students who live within 2 miles from school and are not eligible for bussing. This policy forces him to embark on a 45-minute walk along a busy road in the dark at the wee hours of the morning to make it to school on time. This journey becomes even more treacherous during snowstorms and heavy rain.

I have been lucky enough to be able to provide transportation for my son most days, but some parents do not have that same privilege.
Many families do not have reliable transportation or a schedule that allows them to be available to drive their students.
How many children are walking to school in the rain, during thunderstorms, and in below-freezing temperatures? How many children are walking along busy roads, or in the dark alone? How many children don't have proper coats or shoes for the weather? How many roads don't even have sidewalks?
How many families across Ohio are struggling?

This situation is not unique to us but affects numerous families in our community. The current policy that denies bus service for students living within 2 miles from their school places an undue burden on these children and their families. It also raises safety concerns as these young students navigate through potentially dangerous weather conditions and traffic.

Moreover, research shows that consistent exposure to harsh weather conditions can have detrimental effects on children's health (American Academy of Pediatrics). In addition, studies indicate that stress related to commuting can negatively impact academic performance (American Psychological Association).

We believe every child deserves safe transportation options regardless of where they live relative to their school. We urge the Middletown School District officials and local government representatives to revise this policy immediately.

Please sign this petition if you agree that all students should be provided with bussing services irrespective of their distance from school. Let's ensure our children's safety and well-being are prioritized over logistical convenience or budgetary constraints.
