The Issue

My children are too young to be walking to and from school, and I'm told my oldest is too old to ride the bus because she is within one mile of the school. She is only 8 years old. The school is not willing to help with transportation or make any adjustments. As a parent, this is a profound concern for me, and it’s a worry that I know many other parents share.

The current policy in the Perry NY School District denies bus service to children under 12 who live within a certain distance from school. This leaves many parents in a challenging position, having to juggle work and other responsibilities while ensuring their younger children get to school safely. Our children's safety should not be compromised, and we shouldn't have to worry about them braving harsh weather conditions, especially during the cold winter months, simply because they live "too close" to the school.

Walking to school might seem like an easy solution, but for young children, it poses significant safety risks. There are traffic dangers, potential encounters with strangers, and the physical burden of navigating routes not designed for pedestrians. No parent should have to choose between their child's safety and the rigidity of an outdated policy.

We are calling on the Perry NY School District to revisit their policy on student transportation. We propose that all students under the age of 12 be provided school bus services, regardless of their proximity to the school. Such a change would alleviate parental concerns, ensure the safety of our children, and allow them to focus on their education rather than enduring unnecessary stress during their commute.

Let’s unite and urge the Perry NY School Board to prioritize the safety and well-being of our children by implementing a more inclusive transportation policy. Sign this petition to demand action and support a safer, more accommodating school environment for all our kids.
