The Issue

Living in the bustling area of Rye, NY, parents face a daily challenge of ensuring our children get to and from middle and high schools safely. For families where parents are juggling the demands of work and long commutes, this becomes even more challenging. With the ever-growing traffic congestion, the daily school commute often turns into a stressful ordeal, not only for the parents but also for the students.

Currently, the Rye City School District does not provide bus services for students. This policy places an unfair burden on families, forcing them either to drive their children to school, adding unnecessary cars on the road, or making students walk lengthy distances, bike without lanes and side walks  often in adverse weather conditions.

Research has shown that long commutes can have detrimental impacts on students, contributing to fatigue and affecting their academic performance and overall well-being. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, about 30% of public school students in the U.S. rely on buses to reach school each day. It's time that Rye, a community known for its commitment to educational excellence, aligns with these statistics and offers this essential service.

Providing bus transportation would immensely reduce traffic within the city, decrease the carbon footprint, and ensure safer and more efficient commutes for students. It would enable parents to focus on their jobs during the day, knowing their children have reliable transportation to school. Furthermore, such a move would support the district's mission to nurture and develop every student's full potential by ensuring they arrive at school ready to learn without the additional stress of commuting concerns.

We urge the Rye City School District to reconsider its policy and provide bus services for students living one or more miles away from their schools. Let us come together as a community to create a safer, more efficient, and supportive environment for our students.

By lending your support to this petition, you can help bring about the necessary changes that will benefit all families in our district. Please sign this petition to make a positive difference in our children's daily lives.
