Mandate Roosevelt District to Retain School Libraries and Librarians

The Issue

As a parent, the education of my children and numerous other students heavily relies on the resources provided by school libraries and the invaluable advice of librarians. Yet, alarming news has reached us that the Roosevelt District plans to remove Library as an Elective, and Simply leaving it as an option for students. We all know that kids everywhere are subjected to the harsh reality of being technology addicted. Removing library as an elective will mean they won’t have it apart of their curriculum and possibly not ever want to go to the library anymore, leaving it abandoned.

Our children's education and the academic future of forthcoming students are at stake. These establishments aren't just repositories of books, they are havens of knowledge, where students are introduced to worlds beyond what's covered in the traditional curriculum. Librarians play a crucial part in this education process; their role extends far beyond bookkeeping.

According to a study conducted by the School Library Journal (2013), school libraries enhance student achievement, not only academically but also in terms of developing self-esteem and social skills. These are aspects of education that cannot be ignored. Further, librarians equip students with critical literacy skills that assist them in navigating the complex informational landscape of the 21st century.

We believe that the right to education should be holistic, which includes access to school libraries and librarians. Thus, we ask for your support in persuading the Roosevelt District to retain school libraries and librarians. This is not just for our kids, but for the future generations yet to walk the school corridors.

Growing up in South Phoenix, and being a former Roosevelt School District Student, this is heartbreaking. For many kids like myself, there was not a whole lot to look forward to. So, Library time was an exciting part of my childhood. I was able to experience new worlds and understandings for the things around me. Diving into a book and getting lost in whatever adventure my imagination took me to, was exhilarating!  I cannot fathom my children not being able to keep that experience alive.

School libraries are not mandated by Arizona’s educational standards, but they are to the heart and soul of children everywhere. Please consider signing my petition and sharing it.

Let us voice our concerns together, for the many children who cannot advocate for themselves. Sign today to make a difference tomorrow.  We will be heard!

Thank you to everyone who has shared and signed already.  You guys are amazing humans! Let’s keep it going ♥️
