Mandate Restructuring of Car Insurance Policies

The Issue

As a mother of four, I grapple every day with the burden of paying for car insurance: an insurance that costs me more than my rent, for a decade-old vehicle that I completely own. I have never endured the unfortunate event of a car accident, yet the high premiums I commit to pay seem a complete waste, taking away potential savings to secure my children's future. This quagmire leaves me with no choice but to pay or else risk losing my driving privileges and thus, disrupting my family's daily life.

My story is but a drop in the ocean of torment faced by numerous low-income families across Florida for whom car insurance has become a crippling cost rather than a protective measure.

Against this backdrop, I petition that car insurance companies in Florida be compelled to overhaul their insurance policies. Specifically, insurance premiums should be assembled into policy accounts where each policyholder can be refunded their balance upon termination, provided that no claims have been filed. This approach creates a fair system incentivizing safe driving and ensuring that hard-earned money does not go to waste.

Furthermore, car insurance companies should be mandated to provide low-cost premiums for low-income families who are on government assistance. The right to affordable car insurance is especially critical given the high fraction – around 14.7% in 2019 – of Floridians living in poverty, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

It's a call for justice, for fairness, for the well-being of hundreds of struggling families across Florida. It's high time we adopt insurance policies that respect, not exploit, the realities of those less fortunate. Join the petition today, and let's drive change for all of Florida.
