Mandate Reptile Care Education Prior to Their Purchase

Mandate Reptile Care Education Prior to Their Purchase
The Issue
Drawing from our personal experience, my husband and I have had to rescue seven reptiles suffering due to improper care. Their previous owners, lacking appropriate knowledge about reptile care, failed to provide the correct diet and habitat. As a result, the reptiles became malnourished and developed severe health issues. Unfortunately, our case is not unique. Around the world, thousands of reptiles are suffering as they fall into the hands of uninformed owners.
Reptiles are complex creatures, each species with its unique care requirements regarding diet, habitat, and handling. Hence, owning a reptile is a duty that requires specific knowledge and commitment. Yet, there is currently no requirement for potential reptile owners to demonstrate a basic understanding of their prospective pet's needs.
According to RSPCA, an alarming 75% of reptiles die within their first year in the home due to inadequate care (source: RSPCA reptile report, 2018). With such a high mortality rate, it is evident we need stronger regulations in place to protect these animals.
We call for legislation requiring comprehensive training on reptile care for potential owners ahead of any reptile purchase. This compulsory education would not only equip prospective owners with essential knowledge about their pet's unique care requirements, but also foster a culture of responsible pet ownership.
It is time we take action. Please sign this petition to help us protect thousands of reptiles from needless suffering. Together, we can improve the lives of these fascinating creatures and ensure they are cherished and cared for as they deserve.
