Mandate Rehabilitation Over Incarceration for Substance-Influenced Crimes

Mandate Rehabilitation Over Incarceration for Substance-Influenced Crimes
The Issue
I am a strongly passionate believer in the potential for change within every individual. Each person deserves access to supportive rehabilitation, especially those engaging in criminal activity while under the influence of substances. The influence, if recognized and appropriately addressed, can become a catalyst for monumental change in their lives.
Our petition calls for all crimes committed while under the influence of any substance to be considered for drug/alcohol rehabilitation programs, instead of punitive sentences. We believe the focus on remedy rather than punishment yields better results, and it humanizes our approach to justice. To avoid long-term detrimental effects on individuals and their families, we ask for a maximum sentence limit of 15 years, with consistent, 2 hour-free visitations; allowing time to play games, watch movies & have fun together.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, compulsory treatment has similar efficiency to voluntary treatment, indicating the importance of comprehensive rehabilitation methods even in a penal setting. Considering this, we demand an end of inhumane practices. We seek environments rich in daylight and social interaction opportunities, enabling a holistic recovery.
Furthermore, we propose the inclusion of yoga and meditation classes which are proven stress management techniques (Harvard Health Publishing). These will help inmates gain mastery over their mind and body, and cultivate a positive mindset.

Together, we can transform our justice system into one that prioritizes rehabilitation. This shift to a more compassionate approach will make a profound difference in the lives of many individuals and society at large. Sign the petition and voice the need for this remarkable change.
