Mandate Reduction of Exterior Lighting in Public Buildings to Combat Light Pollution

The Issue

As a dedicated advocate for our planet, it deeply distresses me to witness the unsettling rise of light pollution that’s wreaking havoc on our environment. Seemingly harmless technologies, like outdoor lighting on public buildings, have unintended negative side-effects, impacting countless life forms that have no control over man-made disruptions. Urgent attention and action need to be directed towards this escalating issue.

Light pollution is an oft-ignored menace, yet it affects a large portion of our environment that many aren't aware of. Natural darkness is far more than a mere aesthetic. It is a crucial component of many ecosystems, affecting various life forms, including migratory birds, sea turtles, insects, and bats. Inadvertently, our actions are disrupting their inherent behavioral and physiological rhythms.

Presently, our society is saturated with glaring lights, illuminating our cities beyond necessity, altering the natural state of our planet, and contributing to unnecessary energy wastage. The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) suggests that up to 30% of all outdoor lighting in the U.S. alone is wasted, mostly by lights that aren't shielded. This translates to about $3 billion and releases 21 million tons of carbon dioxide each year.

The time for change is now. I am petitioning for all public buildings to implement a new policy requiring them to turn off 90% of exterior lighting. By doing so, we can mitigate light pollution, conserve energy, and contribute to sustaining our planet's natural environmental balance. This issue may not be on everyone's radar, but with your signature, we can shed light on this topic and demand the necessary action. Sign the petition and take a stance to combat light pollution.
