Mandate recording of all doctor-patient conversations

Mandate recording of all doctor-patient conversations
The Issue
My wife has a complicated medical history. So complicated that we often find ourselves educating doctors about her rare condition. One day, she went to the ER and was denied the right to refuse medication. Due to the hospital's policy prohibiting recordings, there was no way to document her refusal. It turned into a 'he said, she said' situation, ultimately leading to her being placed on full life support.
This personal experience has shown us the critical importance of having a clear, reliable record of all medical communications. We believe that every patient should have the right to have their interactions with medical professionals recorded, even if it’s as simple as an AI dictation app on a cell phone. These recordings should then become part of the patient's medical file.
Recording doctor-patient conversations would empower patients and ensure their rights are protected. It would also foster greater accountability and transparency in medical settings. Errors in communication can lead to detrimental health outcomes and, as in our case, potentially life-threatening situations.
Statistics show that medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the United States, behind heart disease and cancer. A study published by Johns Hopkins in 2016 estimated that more than 250,000 Americans die each year from medical errors. These are preventable situations where better communication and transparency could make a significant difference.
By allowing recordings, we not only protect patients' rights but also provide doctors with a more comprehensive view of a patient’s history, reducing the chances of miscommunication and misdiagnoses. Recording these conversations would provide a safeguard for both patients and healthcare professionals.
Call on healthcare institutions and policymakers to make the recording of all patient-doctor interactions standard practice. Let's make sure that every patient has the right documentation to support their medical treatment and decisions. Sign this petition to urge the implementation of recording doctor-patient conversations to enhance patient safety and trust in the healthcare system.
