Mandate Publicly Broadcasted Presidential Debates with Publicly Voted Questions
The Issue
As a U.S citizen, I have experienced firsthand the distortion of information that can occur through second-hand reporting. In our current political climate, it is increasingly important to hear directly from our potential leaders without the risk of misinterpretation or bias. Therefore, we are calling for a requirement that politicians participate in at least one hour-long debate on Public Broadcasting Networks.
The questions asked during these debates should be determined by public vote to ensure the most pressing issues are addressed. Moderators would not initially pose their own questions but would retain the ability to interject if a candidate strays off topic or evades a question. The debate should involve three presidential candidates chosen by popular vote.
According to Pew Research Center, 68% of Americans get their news on social media where misinformation is rampant (Pew Research Center, 2018). By mandating publicly broadcasted debates with publicly voted questions, we can ensure that voters have direct access to candidates' views and positions on key issues.
This change will not only increase transparency in our political process but also foster greater public engagement and trust in our democracy. Please sign this petition and help us push for more open and honest political discourse in America.
