Mandate Psychiatrists and Doctors to Inform Patients of Akathisia Risk from Antipsychotics
The Issue
My name is [Petitioner’s Name] and I am currently battling with induced Akathisia, a condition thousands of others are suffering from at this very moment too. Akathisia is a state of distressing restlessness that can be brought on by antipsychotic and psychotropic medication. It feels like being trapped in your own body, ceaseless movement driven by a tormenting need.
What exacerbates this already agonizing condition is the lack of information we receive from our own health care providers. We are prescribed antipsychotic and psychotropic medication without being adequately informed about the risk of Akathisia that comes along with it. This needs to change.
Every year, approximately 3% of people taking antipsychotic drugs will develop Akathisia, a condition often misdiagnosed due to a lack of awareness (Psychiatric Times, 2018). It is unacceptable that so many patients are unknowingly subjected to such a risk without any form of fair warning.
We need to make it mandatory for all psychiatrists and doctors to acknowledge the potential for inducing Akathisia with these medications and convey this crucial information to their patients. This will enable patients to make an educated decision regarding their treatment options, and be prepared if the symptoms should manifest.
Raise your voice to support our plea to make it compulsory for physicians to disclose the risk of induced Akathisia from antipsychotic and psychotropic medication. Sign the petition today, because informed patients make better health decisions. Your support can pave the way for a more transparent and responsible health system.
