My father was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. Thankfully, it is in the early stages and currently doesn’t need treatment but will be actively monitored every 3 months for the foreseeable future. This has deeply affected my family, illustrating firsthand the importance of early detection. However, unlike other common cancers such as breast, bowel, and ovarian, routine screening for prostate cancer is not statutory for men over 50.

Prostate cancer is a significant health issue, with statistics from Cancer Research UK indicating that it is the most common cancer in men, accounting for more than 40,000 new cases annually. Early detection is crucial: when diagnosed at an early stage, the survival rate is significantly higher. Despite this, there is no mandated program for men over 50 to undergo Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) testing, a simple and effective way to detect potential signs of prostate cancer at a stage when it is highly treatable.

The lack of statutory PSA testing leaves men vulnerable and uninformed until it's too late. By implementing a systematic screening program, similar to those for other cancers, we can catch prostate cancer early, saving thousands of lives and reducing the emotional and financial toll on families across the UK.

Our petition aims to urge the Department of Health and Social Care to implement a national PSA screening program for men over the age of 50. Such an initiative would bring prostate cancer screening in line with existing programs for other common cancers, ensuring men's health receives the same priority and care.
