The Issue

My hometown is protected by the magnificent Sierra Madre Mountain Ranges, acting as a shield against calamities, particularly typhoons. Living in Northern Luzon has reinforced my connection and undying gratitude towards this natural lifesaver.

However, this mountain range, the longest in the Philippines, is under continuous threat from illegal logging, mining, and other harmful activities. It is home to numerous species of flora and fauna, some of which are endemic to the Philippines and are currently under threat. According to a Conservation International Study, 316 of these species are considered critically endangered (Source: Conservation International Report).

We, the citizens of the Philippines, must take on the responsibility to conserve and rehabilitate the Sierra Madre Mountain Ranges. The threat that the Sierra Madres currently face affects not only the biodiversity residing within its forests, but the safety and welfare of the Filipinos living in the Luzon region.

The Philippine government should legislate protective measures and strictly implement existing environmental laws to halt any activities causing adverse effects on this precious ecological system. Furthermore, government bodies must educate the general public about the importance of the Sierra Madre Mountain Ranges to both the environment and our survival.

We urge all Filipino citizens to help protect our environment. Join us in pushing for a law that will require and encourage every Filipino citizen to partake in actions geared towards the protection and rehabilitation of the Sierra Madre Mountain Ranges.
