Mandate Pennsylvania Lawmakers to Recognize Coercive Control as a Criminal Offense
The Issue
My dear friend, like many others, has escaped a domestic abuse relationship where coercive control was and still is the primary form of abuse. This type of non-physical abuse often goes unnoticed and unaddressed due to its insidious nature. However, it's high time we acknowledge the severity of this issue and demand change. We must disempower abusers.
Coercive control refers to a pattern of behavior by which abusers exert power over their victims through manipulation, intimidation, and threats. It's an invisible chain that keeps victims trapped in abusive relationships. According to Lisa Aronson Fontes, PhD., "Offenders who exercise control over their partner’s daily activities are more than 5 times more likely to kill them than other domestic abusers." She further states that in 20 percent of domestic homicides, the murder was the first act of physical violence—almost always preceded by coercive controlling behavior.
Despite these alarming statistics, Pennsylvania currently lacks legislation specifically addressing coercive control as a criminal offense. This leaves countless individuals vulnerable and without adequate legal protection against this form of abuse.
We implore lawmakers in Pennsylvania not only to recognize but also criminalize coercive control as an offense under law. By doing so, we can provide much-needed protection for victims like my friend and hold offenders accountable for their actions. If coercive control is made illegal, an individual suffering from this form of abuse could file a much-needed restraining order against their abuser. If an abuser violates the restraining order, they could face criminal charges.
Let us stand together against all forms of domestic abuse - visible or not - because everyone deserves safety and respect within their relationships. Please sign this petition urging lawmakers in Pennsylvania to take immediate action on this pressing issue.
