Mandate Parking Provisions for Tenants in Low-Income Buildings

The Issue

Rosewood Building

As a resident of a low-income building managed by The Elizabeth Fry Society in Surrey, BC, Canada, I am deeply concerned about the lack of parking provisions for tenants. Our building houses a medical unit on the first floor staffed by UBC personnel who monopolize the underground parkade. This forces us, the tenants, to resort to street parking regulated by the City Of Surrey.

The location of our building near a hospital means that street parking comes at an exorbitant cost - $10 per day. For many residents here who are already grappling with financial constraints due to their low-income status, this additional expense is untenable. It is unjust that we should bear this burden when we have an underutilized parkade beneath our own home.

This issue extends beyond just our building; it reflects a broader systemic problem in urban planning and housing policies which often overlooks affordable and accessible parking solutions for low-income residents (source: Canadian Urban Institute). We call upon The Elizabeth Fry Society and relevant authorities to rectify this situation immediately.

We demand that each tenant be provided with either a designated spot in our building's parkade or issued with a permit allowing us free access to street parking around our home. It is not only fair but also essential for maintaining quality of life and dignity among all residents regardless of their income level.

Please sign this petition if you believe every tenant deserves equitable access to convenient and affordable parking facilities at their place of residence.
